RYA Young Sailors

The Young Sailors scheme (Stages 1-4) is a great way to learn to sail or improve your existing skills. The Youth Sailing scheme is usually completed in small dinghies suitable for the size of the sailor, but courses can also be completed in keelboats and multihulls. Our expert instructors offer a safe environment for children to have fun, learn and challenge themselves.

Young sailors will be assigned to the appropriate stage course for their experience to assist them in working towards their next stage. The stages are summarised below:

Stage 1 – An introduction to the parts of the boat and the basic principles of how to get a boat sailing

Stage 2 – Develop the skills needed to sail around a course and understand the basic principles needed to become a confident sailor

Stage 3 – Build your confidence and develop the skills needed to sail in different directions in moderate conditions

Stage 4 – Learn how to sail a double-handed boat as crew or helm and solve a variety of problems afloat

A variety of activities will be used to get across the excitement of sailing: racing, games, short trips and some shore-based sessions.

We offer residential accomodation for the duration of this course, onboard our converted lightvessel.

All this will provide you with the skills and knowledge required for achieving an RYA Certificate and have fun afloat. The young sailors scheme has four stages so it is suitable for beginners or more advanced young sailors. We take students from the age of 9.

The ratio of students to instructors will not exceed 3:1. Minimum course duration is approximately 16 hours. The course includes a Youth Sailing Stage 1,2,3 or 4 certificate upon satisfactory completion of the syllabus.
