Trinity Refurbishment

Trinity is now ten years old and yes – there are still things we haven't completed, like the light tower painting. There are also running repairs such us painting the hull, and various replacements. We are also scheming up a new ventilation system for the cabins and a standby generator. Many of our friends who were supporting the Trinity loan repayment have continued their giving and this is accumulating into a fund for all of these things.

  • Funds to date: £11,349
  • Completion date: asap
  • Present needs: (1) prompt progress on a number of these items (2) volunteers to do the work.

Loo and Shower for People with Disabilities

Once the new pontoon access is operational we urgently need to adapt the forward shower and toilet to be wheelchair-friendly – it will be a squeeze but we're used to that.

Project Jacob

Offering recently released young offenders the opportunity of doing voluntary work is what Jacob is all about. Time For God (the agency who introduce many year-out staff to us) have been running this for a year and we are planning to join in and take on a volunteer. Our plan is to engage them in building and property maintenance and welcome them into the FACT community.

  • Projected cost: £30k (estimate)
  • Funds to date: nil
  • Start date: asap
  • Present needs: (1) a suitable candidate; (2) accommodation in the community

Dinghy Training Fleet

Keeping the fleet up to date and keeping pace with modern dinghy sail training trends is one of FACT's priorities. This year , we have sold two Wayfarers, replacing them with a new Wayfarer and a Laser Stratos. Next year, we hope to do the same again. In addition, our volunteer helpers have committed to raising the £4,000 to buy a Dart catamaran - an addition guaranteed to thrill and challenge beginners and old hands alike.

Bursary Fund

When the Cockney Spirit Sail Training Trust closed in 1997, its entire funds were transferred to FACT to set up a bursary fund to enable people from needy areas to enjoy a residential break onboard Trinity. At the outset we used the annual interest, but now with poor interest rates and increasing needs we are spending between £5-7,000 per year. This fund assisted 65 people in 2000. On present usage, the fund will be spent up in 2003, and this coupled with the increasing applications mean that we are keen to boost the fund.

  • Projected cost: £10,000
  • Funds to date: nil
  • Completion date: asap
  • Present needs: full unding

Plain Kate

Our second accommodation vessel, a barge-style former motor yacht, provides important accommodation for eight staff/volunteers. Her cosy traditional build and wood panelling is super but she needs lots of loving care. In the past two years we've rebuilt the foredeck and a team of friends have repainted the topsides. This year we are repairing and sheathing the main deck to make her totally waterproof. Next year will mean a haul out for some bottom work.

  • Projected cost: £5,000
  • Funds to date: £600
  • Completion date: October 2008
  • Present needs: £4,400

Volunteer Development

Training and personal development are high on our list of priorities for volunteers, many volunteers come to us as young as 14yrs and they can very quickly become significant staff even eventually joining the team full time. We provide skills training, much of which has currency in other centres and in the jobs market: RYA dinghy & powerboating, first aid, basic food hygiene, life saving etc. Our in-house training is jointly funded by FACT and the volunteers themselves; from time-to-time we have received specific support for this area – we'd like to see it more strongly underwritten.

  • Projected cost: £5,000 pa
  • Funds to date: nil
  • Completion date: September 2001
  • Present needs: full funding

Loft Repairs

The yacht stores were renovated and given a new lease of life in 1984 through a successful government funded employment-training project. Though regular repairs have been done, we are concerned that some aspects are falling behind and now need some special effort. In particular, some balcony and ladder timbers need replacing and the buildings themselves need a repaint.

  • Projected cost: £4,000
  • Funds to date: nil
  • Completion date: asap
  • Present needs: full funding
